Accelerated Reading is a program to further your child’s reading skills. A.R. is started by the third grade class in the second half of the year (second semester). When a child checks a book out of the library, he/she reads the book, and then takes a test on the library computers. Various books are worth different points based on the difficulty level of the book. Each student is required to obtain a certain amount of points during the 9 weeks period. The amount of points required is always double the grade the student is in. (Ex. 3rd grade requires 6 points, 4th grade—8points, 5ht grade—10 points, etc.) A.R. is required of all students in grades 3—12, and in grades 6—12, when a student gets all of the required points for the 9 weeks, he/she receives a 100pt test grade in English. As the students get older they are required to read more difficult books. It has been scientifically proven that students who read more perform better on tests such as their A.C.T. and S.A.T. Therefore, Riverfield Academy promotes a healthy reading program that focuses on your child’s comprehension skills in orders to prepare him/her for the future.
When students enter the 11th and 12th grade, there is a list of books called the A-B list. If the student is an A or B English student, he/she must read, take a test on and pass one book from this list every 9 weeks. The list consists of classics such as: Wuthering Heights, Jane Eyre, Of Mice and Men, and many others. If the student fails to do so, his/her average grade drop to the highest C (83). These books are more difficult and require more comprehension than other books. Also, this list contains many books that students will need during college. |
